The best GameCube games are Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mario Kart: Double Dash, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, Metroid Prime and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door. In 2026 the more useful question is how you play each one without a GameCube. Some are in Nintendo’s GameCube library for Switch 2, some got standalone Switch remasters, and Melee and Double Dash still need the original disc. Below are 14 picks, each with the place it runs today.
How we chose
We started from the games that keep showing up in the current top search results and fan threads, then cross-checked them against Wikipedia’s list of best-selling GameCube games for sales figures and release dates. Every pick was then checked against Nintendo’s own GameCube – Nintendo Classics page (included and upcoming games) and Nintendo’s store pages for the Switch remasters. Ratings and accessory details come from the Amazon listings, checked November 3, 2026. Nobody on our side ran hands-on tests; the notes on remasters and controllers summarize Nintendo’s specs and owner reviews.

Nintendo Classics availability per Nintendo’s GameCube – Nintendo Classics page, checked November 3, 2026. Nintendo keeps adding titles, so check the app before you buy anything for one specific game. The GameCube library only runs on Switch 2, not on the original Switch.
The 14 games
1. Super Smash Bros. Melee
The best-selling GameCube game, at 7.41 million copies worldwide per Wikipedia’s sales list. It is also the biggest gap in every modern route: Melee is not in the Nintendo Classics app, and Nintendo has never re-released it. If you want Melee specifically, you need the disc and a GameCube or a Wii with GameCube ports. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on Switch is the official successor, and its popularity with GameCube-style pads is the reason those controllers are still sold (more below).
2. Mario Kart: Double Dash
The second best-selling GameCube game at 6.88 million copies. Two characters share each kart, one driving and one throwing items, which made it the most cooperative Mario Kart. Like Melee, it isn’t in the Nintendo Classics library as of our check, so the disc is the only legal route.
3. The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
One of the three launch titles of GameCube – Nintendo Classics in June 2025, alongside F-Zero GX and SoulCalibur II. It sold 4.43 million copies on GameCube. The cel-shaded art has aged better than most early-2000s 3D, which is why it plays well on a modern screen. The Wii U got an HD version in 2013, but that console is long out of production, so on current hardware the Switch 2 app is the practical way in.
4. Metroid Prime
Retro Studios’ 2002 first-person adventure is the best example on this list of a remaster that beats the original for most people. Metroid Prime Remastered came out on Switch in February 2023 with rebuilt graphics and sound, dual-stick controls, motion aiming and the option to keep the classic GameCube-style scheme, per Nintendo’s store page.
Who it’s for: anyone with a Switch or Switch 2 who never played Prime or wants modern aiming. Who should skip it: purists who want exact GameCube button mapping.
- Four control schemes per the listing and owner reviews: Classic, Dual-stick, Pointer and Hybrid.
- A Casual difficulty that reduces damage, per Nintendo.
- Runs on Switch and Switch 2; one owner review reports 1080p/60 fps and notes that Switch 2 handheld mode needs Handheld Boost enabled for the full output.
- 4.8/5 from 3,100+ Amazon ratings (November 2026).
Cons: you can’t freely remap buttons, only pick from preset schemes, according to one detailed owner review. Metroid Prime 2 and 3 are not part of this release.

5. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door
The 2004 RPG came back as a full Switch remake on May 23, 2024. Nintendo lists revamped graphics, an updated soundtrack, quick-travel pipes and a Partner Ring to swap party members. Battles still work on a stage in front of an audience, with timed button presses on every attack.
Who it’s for: players who want a long, funny turn-based RPG and don’t care about the original disc. Who should skip it: anyone sensitive to frame rate.
- Remake rather than emulation: new visuals and music, per Nintendo.
- Single-player; supported on Switch 2 with behavior consistent with Switch, per Nintendo’s compatibility note.
- 4.8/5 from 1,000+ Amazon ratings (November 2026); Amazon’s review summary praises the faithful remake and the story.
Cons: Amazon’s summary lists the frame rate as a mixed point, with several buyers unhappy that it runs at 30 fps. Best Buy’s review summary makes the same remark.

6. Super Mario Sunshine
The third best-selling GameCube game at 5.91 million copies. It had a Switch release inside Super Mario 3D All-Stars in 2020, but Nintendo delisted that compilation on March 31, 2021. Since August 2026 Sunshine is in the GameCube – Nintendo Classics app instead, so Switch 2 owners with Expansion Pack can play it again without hunting for a used 3D All-Stars cartridge.
7. Luigi’s Mansion
A GameCube launch-window game from 2001 that sold 3.33 million copies. It is short, which suits the app’s suspend points: one mansion area per session works well. Nintendo added it to the GameCube library on October 30, 2025.
8. F-Zero GX
Still the fastest-feeling racer in the GameCube lineup, and a launch title of the Switch 2 GameCube app. If Double Dash’s missing re-release annoys you, GX is the GameCube racing game you can play on modern hardware.
9. Resident Evil 4
Capcom released it on GameCube in January 2005 and on PlayStation 2 that October, so its GameCube exclusivity lasted less than a year. The Switch port from May 2019 is based on the later HD release. It doesn’t include the Wii version’s motion aiming, which TheGamer calls a missed opportunity. The 2023 remake is a different game built in a new engine, and it isn’t on the original Switch.
Who it’s for: players who want the 2005 version on a handheld. Who should skip it: anyone who wants the modern remake.
- The 2005 game rather than the 2023 remake, released on Switch May 20, 2019 per the listing.
- Digital code; rated Mature.
Cons: 4.2/5 from only 93 Amazon ratings (November 2026) for the digital code listing, a small sample. No motion controls on Switch.

10. Pikmin and Pikmin 2
Both games came to Switch on June 21, 2023 as Pikmin 1 + 2, per Nintendo’s store page. The originals are 2001 and 2004 GameCube releases. If you liked Pikmin 4, these show where its ideas came from, and the bundle is a single-player release per Nintendo’s listing.
11. Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
Ike’s story and the first 3D Fire Emblem. It had never been re-released before Nintendo added it to the Switch 2 GameCube app, so the app is the first modern way to play it.
12. SoulCalibur II
A 2003 weapon-based fighter and a launch title of the Classics app. The app supports local and online play for up to four players per Nintendo’s listing, so a fighting game from 2003 can again be played against people outside your living room.
13. Ikaruga
Treasure’s shooter reached the West through the GameCube in April 2003. The Switch port from May 2018 supports both horizontal and vertical screen orientation, per Wikipedia, which matters on a handheld you can turn sideways.
14. Pokémon Colosseum
Nintendo announced it for GameCube – Nintendo Classics in April 2025 and still lists it as “upcoming” as of November 3, 2026. Its follow-up, Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness, is already in the app. Until Colosseum arrives, the disc is the only option.
What you need for the Switch 2 GameCube library
Seven of the 14 games above are, or will be, in GameCube – Nintendo Classics, and all of them need the same two things: a Nintendo Switch 2 and a Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. The standard Switch Online tier only covers NES, Super NES and Game Boy. Nintendo’s support FAQ says the GameCube library is exclusive to Switch 2, and that you can play offline but must verify the membership online every seven days.
Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack (12-month individual)
Who it’s for: Switch 2 owners who want Wind Waker, Sunshine, F-Zero GX and the rest without buying discs. Who should skip it: original Switch owners buying it only for GameCube games, which won’t run on their console, and anyone who only cares about Melee or Double Dash.
- Includes the GameCube, N64, Game Boy Advance, SEGA Genesis and Virtual Boy libraries plus the standard NES, SNES and Game Boy apps, per Nintendo.
- Online play for up to four players in GameCube games and save-anytime suspend points.
- Delivered as a digital code; the listing showed 4.7/5 from 1,000+ Amazon ratings when we checked it on October 27, 2026.
Cons: it is a subscription, so the games disappear if you stop paying. Nintendo notes the reproductions differ in performance and presentation from the originals.

Which controller for GameCube games on Switch
Nintendo sells its own wireless GameCube controller for Switch 2 directly to paid Switch Online members, with a C button that opens GameChat and a limit of four per account, so it isn’t on Amazon. The controller is optional; Nintendo says it isn’t required to play the GameCube collection. The common third-party alternative is PowerA’s.
PowerA Wireless Controller for Nintendo Switch – GameCube Style
Who it’s for: Smash Bros. Ultimate players and anyone who wants the GameCube layout for the Classics app and other Switch games. Who should skip it: players who need rumble or analog triggers.
- Officially licensed Bluetooth controller with octagonal gated sticks and the large A button, per PowerA’s listing.
- Adds a left shoulder button, a larger D-pad, motion controls and the Switch system buttons.
- Runs on two AA batteries, rated by PowerA at up to 30 hours.
- 4.5/5 from 10,400+ Amazon ratings for the silver version (November 2026).
Cons: no HD rumble, IR or amiibo NFC per the listing, and one detailed owner review notes the triggers are digital, not pressure-sensitive. Amazon’s review summary for another color of the same model reports durability problems and stick drift for some owners. It is sold as a Switch controller, so check that it pairs with your Switch 2 before you rely on it there.

Which route fits you
- You have a Switch 2: Expansion Pack gets you Wind Waker, Sunshine, Luigi’s Mansion, F-Zero GX, Path of Radiance and SoulCalibur II. Add Metroid Prime Remastered and the Thousand-Year Door remake, both supported on Switch 2, and you cover 8 of our 14 picks.
- You have an original Switch: skip the GameCube app. Buy the remasters and ports instead: Metroid Prime Remastered, Thousand-Year Door, Pikmin 1 + 2, Resident Evil 4 and Ikaruga.
- You want Melee or Double Dash: original hardware and discs. Our CRT vs LCD guide covers what to plug a GameCube into.
- You’re working through Nintendo’s back catalog: our best N64 games list uses the same subscription, and our best Wii U games guide covers the Wind Waker HD generation.
