The best cozy games on Switch right now are Stardew Valley, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, Unpacking and Spiritfarer. Stardew Valley is the one to start with: it has the most to do, a 4.8/5 average from 4,000+ Amazon ratings, and it is the clearest modern heir to the 1990s farm games. That’s our angle. Most cozy-game lists treat the genre as new. It isn’t. Three of these five trace straight back to Harvest Moon on the Super NES and to the Nintendo 64 Animal Crossing that never left Japan, and for each pick we note which older game to try if you like it.
How we chose
We started from the games that come up most often in the current top results for “best cozy games”, including the r/CozyGamers favorites thread and the big editorial lists, then kept the ones that have a physical Switch edition you can still order. For each game we checked the publisher or Nintendo page for player counts and edition contents, Wikipedia for release history, and the Amazon listing for the rating and owner feedback, all on October 30, 2026. We didn’t run our own play tests for this article. Pros and cons summarize publisher specs, published reviews and owner reviews.
The five picks at a glance

| Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life | Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life (GameCube, 2004 in North America) | 1 | 4.7/5, 680+ ratings (Premium Edition) |
| Unpacking | None direct; the story starts in 1997 | 1 | 4.7/5, 350+ ratings |
| Spiritfarer | None direct | 1 to 2 local co-op | Not confirmed for the US listing |
Player counts from Fangamer, Nintendo and Thunder Lotus. Release history from Wikipedia. Ratings from the Amazon listings named in Sources.
1. Stardew Valley: the best cozy game overall
Eric Barone built Stardew Valley alone over about five years and released it on PC in 2016. Wikipedia and his own interviews are clear about where it came from: he was a Harvest Moon fan who felt the series had gotten worse after Harvest Moon: Back to Nature and set out to fix what bugged him about it. The result keeps the Harvest Moon loop (seasonal crops, animals, a town full of people to befriend) and adds mining, combat, crafting and quests.
Who it’s for: anyone who wants one cozy game with hundreds of hours in it, and Harvest Moon fans who want the same feel with more depth. Who should skip it: players who want zero pressure, because the day clock and stamina bar push you to plan.
- Fangamer’s Switch cartridge ships with version 1.6 and an 18-page full-color manual; later updates download for free.
- Online co-op with up to 3 friends on Switch; the Switch 2 Edition raises that to 7 and adds split-screen for up to 4 on one console.
- Five farm map layouts and 12 characters you can marry, per the listing.
- 4.8/5 from 4,000+ Amazon ratings (October 2026), with an Amazon’s Choice badge.
Cons: the mines include real combat, which surprises people who expected pure farming. Online co-op on Switch needs a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Fangamer’s cartridge is one of several Stardew listings on Amazon, so check the seller is Fangamer before you buy.
If you like it, try: the original 1997 Harvest Moon. Nintendo added it to the Super NES app in the standard Switch Online tier in June 2023, so you can see where Stardew’s calendar, shipping bin and festivals started.

2. Animal Crossing: New Horizons: best for families on one console
The series began as Dōbutsu no Mori on the Nintendo 64 in Japan on April 14, 2001. Wikipedia lists it as the last game Nintendo released for the N64. The West only got the enhanced GameCube version, released in North America on September 16, 2002. New Horizons keeps the same idea, a village of animal neighbors you visit a little every day, and moves it to an island you shape yourself.
Who it’s for: households where several people want to play the same world, and anyone who likes a game that asks for a short visit each day rather than a long session. Who should skip it: siblings who each want their own island on one shared Switch. Nintendo allows only one island per console, no matter how many copies you buy.
- Up to 8 residents on one island, and up to 4 can play at the same time on one console (extra controllers needed).
- Up to 8 players on one island through local wireless or online play; the Switch 2 Edition upgrade raises online play to 12.
- 4.8/5 from 75,000+ Amazon ratings (October 2026), the biggest rating pool on this list by far.
Cons: the one-island rule is the big one. Online visits need a paid Switch Online membership. Each extra local wireless player also needs their own console and copy.
If you like it, try: the GameCube original if you still have the hardware. Our CRT vs LCD guide covers what to plug a GameCube into.

3. Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life: best for Harvest Moon fans
This is a remake of Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life, which came out on the GameCube in Japan in September 2003 and in North America in March 2004. The remake launched on Switch on June 27, 2023. Instead of filling a calendar with chores, it follows one farmer across years: you marry, raise a child and watch them grow up, and the child may or may not take over the farm.
Who it’s for: players who grew up on the GameCube version, and anyone who wants a slower, story-led farm game. Who should skip it: people who want to farm with a partner; Nintendo lists it as single player only.
- Eight marriage candidates, available regardless of the gender you pick, with a non-binary option at character creation.
- New compared with the original: hybrid crops, facility upgrades, new tools, goat and sheep breeding and a camera feature.
- The Premium Edition adds a large cloth poster and a goat pocket plush, 3.5 inches tall by 4 inches long.
- 4.7/5 from 680+ Amazon ratings for the Premium Edition (October 2026). Small download: 1.1 GB per Nintendo.
Cons: no multiplayer of any kind. CGMagazine scored it 8/10 and called it “both an oddity and a gem”, which is a fair warning that it plays differently from Stardew. The Premium box is mostly about the extras; a standard physical edition also exists.
If you like it, try: Harvest Moon: Friends of Mineral Town, the 2003 Game Boy Advance entry, which was later remade for Switch as Story of Seasons: Friends of Mineral Town.

4. Unpacking: best short cozy game
Unpacking, by Brisbane studio Witch Beam, is a puzzle game about taking a woman’s belongings out of boxes over eight moves, from a 1997 childhood bedroom to a home in 2018. Nobody speaks. You learn her story from what she keeps, what she leaves behind and where things end up. It won two BAFTA Games Awards.
Who it’s for: players who want something calm and short, and anyone who likes watching one person’s stuff change from 1997 to 2018. Who should skip it: players looking for a long-term game to return to every day.
- No timers, meters or scores, per the listing.
- 35 rooms across all homes; Wikipedia counts over 14,000 foley sound effects.
- Soundtrack by BAFTA-winning composer Jeff van Dyck.
- 4.7/5 from 350+ Amazon ratings (October 2026); Amazon’s review summary says buyers find it relaxing and “zen”.
Cons: it is short. Amazon’s summary says owners disagree on game length and value for money, and some don’t think it is worth a physical purchase. The physical cartridge comes from Limited Run Games, so stock can come and go.

5. Spiritfarer: best cozy game for two players
Thunder Lotus calls Spiritfarer “a cozy management game about dying”. You play Stella, who ferries spirits to the afterlife: you build out a boat, farm, fish, cook and craft for your passengers, then say goodbye to each one. A second player can join locally as Daffodil the cat, which makes it the best couch co-op pick on this list.
Who it’s for: couples or a parent and older child who want to play side by side, and anyone who likes the Stardew loop but wants a stronger story. Who should skip it: anyone not in the mood for grief as a theme. The developer recommends parental guidance because the story covers death, physical disability, mental illness and suicide.
- Local co-op for 2 players on one console (one controller each).
- The physical edition from iam8bit and Skybound came out August 3, 2021, rated T for Teen.
- Box extras: collectible postcards and a sticker stamp set, plus download codes for the soundtrack by Max LL and a 96-page digital art book.
- Steam shows “Very Positive” recent reviews (87% positive, October 2026); IGN and GameSpot both scored it 9/10.
Cons: it is emotionally heavy for a “cozy” game. The cartridge came out in August 2021, before the December 2021 Farewell Edition date Kotaku lists, so expect to download updates for the later content. We couldn’t confirm a current rating count on the US Amazon listing.

Play the originals: Harvest Moon on Switch Online
If this list sends you back to the source, the cheapest route is Nintendo Switch Online. The original Super NES Harvest Moon, developed by Amccus, directed by series creator Yasuhiro Wada and published in North America by Natsume in 1997, sits in the Super NES app, which is part of the standard tier. You don’t need the Expansion Pack for it. That tier covers the NES, Super NES and Game Boy libraries; Expansion Pack is what adds Nintendo 64 and Game Boy Advance games, and our best N64 games list covers what you get there. If you want both, the 12-month Expansion Pack code is on Amazon.

The Japanese N64 Animal Crossing is a different story. It never got an English release, and the GameCube version is the realistic way to play the original on hardware.

FAQ
What is the best cozy game of all time?
Stardew Valley and Animal Crossing come up most often in the fan threads and lists we checked. Stardew wins if you want depth; Animal Crossing wins if you want the lowest-pressure daily routine.
Is Stardew Valley based on Harvest Moon?
Yes. Eric Barone has said he started it as a Harvest Moon-style game because he felt the series had declined after Back to Nature, and he wanted to fix the problems he saw in it.
Can two people have their own islands on one Switch in Animal Crossing?
No. Nintendo allows one island per console. Up to 8 players can live on that island, but a second island needs a second console.
Is Spiritfarer suitable for kids?
It is rated T for Teen in the US, and the developer recommends parental guidance because it deals with death, disability, mental illness and suicide. The gameplay itself is gentle.
Can I play the original Harvest Moon on Switch?
Yes. The SNES Harvest Moon has been part of the Super NES app in the standard Nintendo Switch Online tier since June 2023 in North America; Nintendo’s Japanese update that month added a different game instead.
